How Can You Prove You Learned These Skills? The Internet, rapidly developing technology, and cheaper technology are working together to quickly create a more level educational playing field for motivated learners. The question is quickly becoming how will institutions like universities, companies, and governments begin to recognize skills, knowledge, and abilities learned outside of the prototyp paths? (By normal, we mean the process of earning a degree from a university, or getting training through you r job.)Right now, it is not acceptable to claim that you earned skills or abilities from the Internet on your resume. It is too difficult to prove that you rigorously studied the information and learned new skills to a satisfactory degree. That is why the degree system exists at universities it standardizes the level of competence needed to earn the degree. However, there are massive projects being undertaken to begin a new standardization process ones that could help people who cannot afford college, or are simply self-motivated learners, prove that they have skills and abilities on par with those who earned a normal university degree. TipAnother way to prove you have these skills is to dig back to your school days. Learn how to strategically use your extracurricular activities to show off your skills.Mozillas Open Badges ProjectAt Resume Genius, we are particularly interested in Mozillas Open Badges project. To summarize briefly, Open Badges hopes to create a process where your s kills can be tested and proven, with the evidence/results stored in a digital format (in the form of a badge). Theoretically, you could collect these badges, and offer them as evidence to universities to earn credits, or to companies as supplement for your resume. We believe that such a process could truly bring revolutionary changes to the way people learn skills and choose career paths.Although we believe that people should learn for the sake of learning, we also believe in practicality. That is why we are excited about Mozillas Open Badges, and the democratization of education on the web.

What You Might Need To Sacrifice If You Really Want To Get Ahead
What You Might Need To Sacrifice If You Really Want To Get Ahead The world is divided into two groups of people those who love the question where do you see yourself in five years? and those who recoil in horror and dive under the couch whenever its asked. For the five year-ers, life can be planned. These people have a destination, and they set out the markers, the milestones, and the achievements by calendar date. They know where they want to be and they know when its going to happen. They are seen as goal driven and clear headed, and they have already nailed the second most boring interview question ever. But they also run the risk of developing tunell vision and therefore missing great opportunities because they dont necessarily adhere to a particular plan. For the couch divers, this is a ridiculous question. Theyre fond of quoting that infamous guru Woody Allen If you want to hear God laugh, tell him about your plans. You can have a goal, you can schedule it out and then stuff ha ppens. These people are seen as the adventurers, explorers, and change agents. They can be, however, victims of shiny penny syndrome chasing down every new idea, being an inch deep and looking back without a clear sense of what exactly they achieved. For the ambitious, it doesnt really matter which you are. It matters that youre hungry and that you try harder all the time. It matters that you often feel that your best could totenstill be better. You want more. Youll take more. Youll do more. And you really want to get ahead. In my coaching practice, the first question I ask the strivers and drivers is how do you define success? This is the place to start not with a plan, necessarily, but with a sense. How will you know that youre successful? Different people have wildly different answers and definitions. For one client, it welches a dollar figure. Money bought her freedom, and she wanted lots of freedom, so she wanted lots of money. For another, it was a title the recognition from the outside world that she was a CEO. And yet a third believed that it was tapping her potential, working her way down the professional list to know that she had done all that she was capable of doing. The answer to this question creates a litmus test for you to better assess what sacrifices are worth making and which are unnecessary -- and therefore avoidable. For the money driven, it means that they will sacrifice interesting work if something less glamorous will increase net worth faster. For the woman wanting to maximize her abilities, shell sacrifice forward movement up a large corporate ladder to sniff out the work no one has yet done or the problems that are still to be solved because they energize her.No matter what getting ahead means to you, there are also the personal sacrifices to consider. If youre married, theres a partner in the mix. How much time with them do you want to sacrifice? Will they understand? What wont they accept? And of course children add another layer of complexity to this equation. How much time away from them is acceptable to you? Do you see this as a sacrifice or just part of normal life? Both answers are true, either is acceptable. If youre single, there are still sacrifices to weigh. Will working this hard make you happy? Are you seeing your friends, spending time with family, and doing the things you love that make you a better rounded and more content human being?Succeeding at anything means a trade off of time and patience for the hope of something yet achieved. You cant have it all but you can figure out what you really want and go into that thoughtfully and consciously about what you also cant have.--Nancy Halpern is an executive coach with a proven track record in helping senior leaders and their teams reach their full potential. Handing in a Job Application After the Deadline
Handing in a Job Application After the DeadlineHanding in a Job Application After the DeadlineWhile your chances of getting an interview after submitting a late application are slim. However, theres also no harm in still submitting an application. Its possible that the company may consider your application if it hasnt received enough resumes from qualified applicants by the close of the deadline. When the deadline hits, they may still be looking for great people. You could be one of them. Why Employers Set Closing Dates As a hard-and-fast-rule, its always much better if you submit your job application by the closing date. Thats just common sense. Organizations set closing dates to cut off the number of applications they must consider for vacant positions. They give the job posting enough time to attract a sufficient applicant pool, but leid so much time that the volume of applications overwhelms people screening those applications. If its critical for the position to be filled qu ickly, the organization might set a shorter deadline than it normally would. Deadlines Matter You want to enhance your chances of getting the job by showing the company you can comply with its announced deadline. The deadline mitigates the possibility the organization will hire someone who has trouble with deadlines. If someone fails to turn in an application on time, the organization can be leery about giving that person any more deadlines to miss. The sample size for measuring lateness is minuscule, but thats all the organization has to judge. Now is a good time to show the company you can meet deadlines with no problem. How Online Applications Ensure Timeliness Online application systems make it easy for applicants to ensure they turn in their application materials on time. Many systems allow each applicant to check the progress of a submitted application through the hiring process. If hiring managers and human resources department staff keep this information up-to-date, they get fewer calls and emails from applicants inquiring about a particular applicants standing in the hiring process. But Sometimes You Cant Help But Miss the Deadline Even so, sometimes you cant meet the deadline for reasons outside your control. Lets say you just came across the job listing today, and youre shocked to binnensee the deadline was yesterday. Or a few days ago. But its the perfect job for you, and you know youd be an ideal fit Or maybe you missed the deadline because life got in the way. Maybe you were aware of the deadline in advance, but unavoidable circumstances prevented you from meeting the deadline. Stuff happens. In either case, dont despair. Submit your application right away But dont hesitate about it anymore. Get cracking on it right away and complete that application immediately. The door is closing. In either situation, your application might get noticed. Especially in a tight job market, companies are always looking for talented, hardworking, qualif ied employees. You might just be the exact person theyre looking for. Opening the Door for Future Opportunities Heres another reason why it can be okay to submit your application after a deadline. Maybe youre not a perfect fit for the position you applied for, but maybe the company needs someone whos just like you for another position- another one that it may or may not have advertised. Maybe a new job requisition just popped up in the department, and the company decides you might be right for it even before its posted. Theres another possibility. Maybe the company doesnt need someone like you right now, but possibly the hiring manager will take one look at your resume and decide to keep you in mind for future opportunities. You might not get the job you applied for- but the company might contact you down the road about another position.

MethaneSniffing Drones in Fracturing Operations
MethaneSniffing Drones in Fracturing Operations MethaneSniffing Drones in Fracturing Operations A significant issue with the hydraulic-fracturing process is the release of methane, an abundant gas in oil shale reservoirs that migrates upward through the drill hole to the surface, where it escapes into the atmosphere or is burned off through flaring. There are also numerous other locations in the oil and gas production infrastructure where methane can escape, such as loose pipe flanges, inefficient compressors, and outdated equipment. As the rate of hydraulic fracturing continues to increase across the country, methane release is increasingly recognized as a pollution problem. About 9 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. consist of methane. When released into the atmosphere, methane traps up to 30 times more heat than carbon dioxide, which may accelerate climate change. Flaring by oil and gas companies at drill sites is also a waste of this valuable byproduct, which burn s more cleanly than coal.As a result, there is growing interest in identifying and controlling methane leaks from hydraulic fracturing operations. In 2014, the Obama administration announced plans to reduce methane emissions from several sources, including oil and natural gas production. Also in that year, Colorado became the first state in the U.S. to limit methane emissions from oil and gas operations. Other states, such as California, are in the process of revising their regulations, which could include restrictions or penalties on the release methane and other gases. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates methane leaks in natural gas production at about 1.5 percent. Source MIT Energy InitiativeBring in the DronesWith nearly 500,000 hydraulically fractured gas wells across the U.S. and a vast network of connecting pipelines and other infrastructure, reducing methane emissions is a daunting and costly problem to tackle. The key is devising an industry-wide method for su rveying, identifying, and correcting methane leaks in drilling and processing operations. Some organizations, such as TransCanada Corporation (which wants to build the Keystone XL pipeline), utilize helicopters equipped with laser spectroscopic systems that identify methane concentrations in the atmosphere. The central unit emits an infrared laser signal when the laser beam strikes methane gas, some of the light in the beam is deflected, creating a distinctive signature. The difference between the emitted laser and received laser is directly proportional to the amount of methane encountered. Infrared camerasin aircraft as well as satelliteshave also been effective in identifying methane leaks over large areas.A faster and more cost-effective approach is the use of methane-sniffing drones. Robert Jackson, an environmental scientist at Duke University, has been testing drones as a way to detect the release of methane over hydraulic fracturing operations. A key limitation, he notes, is the weight of the payload. Carrying a big camera or methane sensor, a drone might be able to stay in the air for 30 minutes, says Jackson. Its difficult to screen a shale play with that kind of time. In Australia, Draco Scientific is developing small drones to carry optical sensors for detecting and measuring greenhouse gases in three dimensions. The highly sensitive optical sensors can help monitor gas emissions over critical sites such as drill sites, gas pipelines, landfills, and municipal operations.New and Improved Methane SensorsResearchers are developing more sensitive methane sensors for leak detection that utilize cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). For example, Colorado State University Ventures has created an advanced CRDS system that can be installed on drones to provide real-time measurement of methane emissions. The sensor can discern between oil-and-gas-related methane emissions and those from biogenic sources, such as cattle.A principle advantage of the sensor is i ts simple design, which allows for a lighter weight and less expensive, less complicated system, says Jeremy Nelson, director of licensing and business development for Colorado State University Ventures. These features, he notes, make the sensor suitable for large-scale deployment in both stationary systems and unmanned aerial vehicle and drone applications. The high sampling rate (1 Hertz) allows for applications in high-speed moving vehicles such as UAVs and land-based vehicles so that large areas can be quickly monitored by a single sensor instrument, saving time and reducing survey costs.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Learn more at the ASME Hydraulic Fracturing Conference 2015. For Further DiscussionResearchers are developing sensitive methane sensors based on cavity ring-down spectroscopy that can be installed on drones to provide real-time measurement of methane emissions.
